Integrated Land Management Bureau - e-Tools and Services

First Nations Pilot Training Project

BC has natural resource data that is of interest to First Nations.  BC has also developed a suite of e-tools and services that they want to share with First Nations to better access natural resource data.  As such, in March 2007 the Integrated Land Management Bureau, in consultation with FNTC, hosted 3 pilot workshops to train the initial First Nation clients who had expressed an interest in learning ILMBs’ web-based analysis tools and services used to access this resource information.

ILMB is committed to continuous improvement and this pilot was used to gather input on the ease of use of their tools and services and on the capacity of this pilot group to use the tools and services.  The resulting Report: First Nations Pilot Training Results and Recommendations identifies issues that ILMB has agreed to address, and raises issues that could be wide-spread in First Nations communities – i.e. lack of technical capacity, lack of time, lack of resources to incorporate new learning into current practice, etc.

FNTC would like to commend ILMB for publishing this Report, and for their commitment to work with us and all First Nations communities in BC to improve the capacity to access and use natural resources data.

Everyone needs at least basic computer skills. It's not always easy to develop those skills if you live in a remote community but, if you have access to the Internet, you'll be able to access some very good training programs on-line. If your connection to the internet is too slow, most commercial software have training packages available on cd-rom. Packages to teach basic typing, word-processing, spreadsheets or presentation applications as well as web-site construction are readily available. We've listed just a few sites below as examples and would love to hear from you with the sites you've found to be most helpful. If you're having problems finding what you need, email the First Nations Technology Council at info@fntc.info and we'll do our best to help you.
